Soda & Mentos Experiment

Hello again CDS friends! I was thinking about the fun times we had in science doing the Valentine’s Day candy experiments. Remember the Skittles, cotton candy and sugar cube experiments?  I have another favorite candy experiment to share with you today:  Soda & Mentos!  Click the link below and watch me create other frothy fountains!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GgrYr_Z2CHmf8P4f0eIAFgVxtXeN92yb/view?usp=sharing

In this experiment I changed one component – the brand of soda. All the sodas reacted differently, so all the fountains were different heights.  What else could you change? Maybe the amount of Mentos you drop into the soda? Or maybe try it with a soda that has been opened for a few days?  What happens?

Here is a link to someone else doing the experiment—Is it just like mine or different?

Elephant Toothpaste with Mrs. Lanman

Hi CDS Friends!  Want to make a fabulous foamy fountain?  YES?

Click below and you can do it with me, Mrs. Lanman!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DGUyDQ4WHryw4lia73pzL1IjUPYHu9NO/view?usp=sharing

There are many versions of the “Elephant Toothpaste” science demonstration on-line.

Check out this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edEfc_fIGXs

When conducting an experiment, you could decide to change one component. For example, you could use more or less yeast (Mrs. Lanman used one packet, which is about 1 tablespoon in about 1/3 cup of water). Or you could change the strength of the hydrogen peroxide.  Make a prediction about what you think will happen when you change one component.  Then conduct the experiment and see what actually happens.  Was your prediction correct? You could keep a chart of results based on the component you changed each time you do the experiment.  Remember, always conduct science experiments with adult supervision.

Sink/Float & Diaper Science with Mrs. Lanman

Last week’s eggshells experiment made Mrs. Lanman think about another experiment—Does an egg sink or float?   Click on the videos, featuring Mrs. Lanman, to see both a sink/float experiment and a cool diaper science demonstration! (note: we had some technical difficulty during video production, so please watch one video after the other)
