Science Exploration – April 22

HOW STRONG IS AN EGGSHELL?

Some shapes are stronger than others.  Eggs which seem fragile are actually very strong in certain ways.  Click on the video below to learn more with our science coordinator Mrs. Lanman:

WHAT DID WE LEARN?

Eggshells naturally form a dome shape.  Domes are very good at spreading weight evenly in all directions so that no part of the dome has to support more weight than another part.  The downward force of the books is transferred evenly by the dome shape down to the work surface.

We hope you had fun experimenting with eggs today!  If the rain arrives later this week as predicted, Mrs. Lanman suggests you explore two more of her favorite blogs for more science fun:

“Visit” a working farm!

Amy Overbeck, the mom of Natalie in Mrs. Hatcher’s Pre-K class, sent along a suggestion for your kids. As some of you may know, Mrs. Overbeck is an editor and story producer. She was the editor for “The Biggest Little Farm,” an amazing documentary about Apricot Lane Farms released in 2018. Every Friday at 1 pm EST the farm has a segment about 20 minutes long that covers an animal topic geared towards kids, kind of like a mini farm tour. You can find all of the live streams on the farm’s Youtube channel (youtube.com/apricotlanefarms).
Hope you can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to “visit” a working farm
