Thanksgiving Food & Book Drive 2017

In support of Saint Luke Caring Ministries Thanksgiving Food Basket Project

November 1-15, 2017

Families can drop off groceries in their classroom all week. Please see below for specific requests. Children will be bringing select items to their chapel gatherings on Wednesday and Thursday (Nov.  15 & 16) for their Thanksgiving Chapel. All groceries collected will be donated to the Thanksgiving Food Basket ministry and Food Pantry at Saint Luke.

This year we will also be collecting gently used books to be shared with families receiving food bags. We are looking for books for children from babies through elementary school.

Sorting of groceries and basket distribution will be November 20 and 21. If you are able to help on these dates please contact Ruth Manchester at rmanchester@saintluke.us

Sharing our Blessings at Thanksgiving

Our contributions to the Saint Luke food pantry

The Saint Luke food pantry provides Thanksgiving baskets to families who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a special feast on this cherished holiday. In addition to these baskets, the pantry provides groceries to those in need year-round. We love to give out fresh produce and other fresh/perishable items but please note these items can only be brought to the church on Sunday, 11/19, or in the mornings on 11/20 or 11/21 to ensure they are fresh for Thanksgiving.

Items we need most for Thanksgiving:

Potatoes – white & sweet—fresh or in cans

Greens-fresh or canned

Eggs

Butter

Carrots-fresh

Gravy – pkg. /can

Dessert items (Jell-O, cake mix etc.)

Fresh fruits such as bananas, apples, pears,

Onions

You can donate $15 (checks made out to Saint Luke–put “turkey” in the memo line”) will cover the cost of a turkey to be handed out to families

Items always needed:

Pasta

Pasta Sauce/Tomatoes

Peanut Butter (regular type, 18 oz)

Canned fruit

Soup One-pot meals (stew, ravioli etc.)

Tuna, Spam, Chicken (in cans)

Beans

Rice

Latino Food Items of any kind

We do not need cans of pumpkin, cranberries or stuffing mix as the pantry is well-stocked with these items. Average sizes are preferred. If large cans/pkgs. are donated, they won’t make it into Thanksgiving bags but will be given at some time to large families or taken to the Shepherd’s Table.

The egg hunt will occur outside on the parsonage lawn, weather permitting!

Please allow plenty of time for parking as the church will be busy Saturday morning, and we don’t want you to be late for the fun! You will most likely need to park in the Highland Drive parking lot.

Saint Luke CDS Emergency/Weather Closing and Delay Guidelines

Just a reminder of our emergency or weather-related school closing and delay guidelines…

The CDS follows Montgomery County Public Schools announcements for unscheduled school delays and closings.

If Montgomery County announces a delayed opening the 2-year-old classes will not be in session. The 3-year-old and Pre-K classes will begin two hours late and adjourn at their regular times.

If Montgomery County announces a school closing, the CDS is closed.

Tune to local TV and talk radio (WTOP 103.5 is one choice) for MCPS closing info.

Also subscribe to the FREE alert service at www.schoolsout.com for Saint Luke-specific closing information. Click on subscribe and you may ignore the paid subscription information if you wish, instead clicking on the small print to the right of the page indicating “free email alert.” Choose Saint Luke Christian Day School from the pull down menu under “Maryland.” (for a small fee you can subscribe and receive cell phone alerts as well)
