Thanksgiving Food & Book Drive 2016

In support of Saint Luke Caring Ministries Thanksgiving Food Basket Project

November 1-15, 2016

Families can drop off groceries in their classroom all week. Please see below for specific requests. Children will be bringing select items to their chapel gatherings on Wednesday and Thursday (Nov.  16 & 17) for their Thanksgiving Chapel. All groceries collected will be donated to the Thanksgiving Food Basket ministry and Food Pantry at Saint Luke.

This year we will also be collecting gently used books to be shared with families receiving food bags. We are looking for books for children from babies through elementary school.

Sorting of groceries and basket distribution will be November 21 and 22. If you are able to help on these dates please contact Ruth Manchester at rmanchester@saintluke.us

Sharing our Blessings at Thanksgiving

Our contributions to the Saint Luke food pantry

The Saint Luke food pantry provides Thanksgiving baskets to families who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a special feast on this cherished holiday. In addition to these baskets, the pantry provides groceries to those in need year-round. We love to give out fresh produce and other fresh/perishable items but please note these items can only be brought to the church on Sunday, 11/20, or in the mornings on 11/21 or 11/22 to ensure they are fresh for Thanksgiving.

Items we need most for Thanksgiving:

Potatoes – white & sweet—fresh or in cans

Greens-fresh or canned

Eggs

Butter

Carrots-fresh

Stuffing Mix – bag/box Gravy – pkg. /can Dessert items (Jell-O, cake mix etc.) Fresh fruits such as bananas, apples, pears,

Onions

$10 Giant or Safeway gift cards for the Thanksgiving turkey

Items always needed:

Pasta

Pasta Sauce/Tomatoes

Peanut Butter (regular type, 18 oz)

Canned fruit

Soup One-pot meals (stew, ravioli etc.)

Tuna, Spam, Chicken (in cans)

Beans

Rice

Latino Food Items of any kind

We do not need cans of pumpkin or cranberries as the pantry is well-stocked with these items. Average sizes are preferred. If large cans/pkgs. are donated, they won’t make it into Thanksgiving bags but will be given at some time to large families or taken to the Shepherd’s Table.

Between May 1st and May 12th we will be collecting:

  • New and Opened Packages of Diapers (infant and adult sizes)
  • New Packages of Baby Wipes
  • Formula (please check expiration date)
  • Baby Food Jars and Pouches

The DC Diaper Bank works to provide an adequate and reliable supply of diapers to babies, toddlers and their families in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.  Diapers and other baby essentials are provided to social service organizations that are already helping families in need through comprehensive programs and services.  This ensures that diapers are distributed to the families that need them the most and in the most effective way.

Over 100,000 diapers are distributed each month to partner organizations. There are currently 3 organizations in Montgomery County: YMCA Silver Spring, Family Services, Inc., and Montgomery County Family Center!
